NASAL CONGESTION

Facts

Sinuses are the air-filled spaces connected to your nasal passages.
When nasal passageways become blocked due to swollen tissues, excess mucus can cause nasal congestion and sinus pressure.

Symptoms

Nasal congestion and sinus pressure can have many causes. A cold or flu can cause the membranes lining the nasal passages to become inflamed and irritated. The nasal passages produce excess mucus in the attempt to flush out whatever is causing the irritation, this results in swollen tissues causing nasal congestion.

Nasal congestion can be related to a number of causes, including:

  • Common cold or flu.
  • Sinus infection.
  • Hay fever or allergies.

Causes

An airborne virus causes the common cold.
Colds can be contagious and spread with sneezing, coughing and hand contact.
Colds are more common in winter as people spend more time indoors with each other.

Treatment

Keep your nasal passages and sinuses moist by:

  • Using a humidifier or vaporiser.
  • Drinking lots of fluids.
  • Using a saline spray or try a decongestant nasal spray for relief of nasal congestion.
